Originally native to the Mediterranean region, the English referred to it as Southernwood when the Romans brought it to the region. As with all Artemisias, it was historically used as a cure for intestinal parasites. It was used as a strewing herb and is best used today in sachets for stored woolens, as its strong aroma deters moths.
